Athos Pilgrimage uses Thessaloniki Airport “Makedonia” (SKG) as the international meeting point. You arrange your own journey from your country to SKG. The exact group pickup time is confirmed for the pilgrimage date; the organised service begins at that pickup, not in Bucharest, London, Paris or another origin city.
3. Keep a disruption buffer
International travel can be affected by missed connections, border processing and airline changes. For long-haul journeys especially, use a conservative arrival plan rather than targeting the last possible connection before group pickup.
4. Understand the Ouranoupoli stage
The official pilgrim information published by the Mount Athos Center describes the permit delivery process through the Pilgrims’ Office branch in Ouranoupoli. Treat office hours, fees and procedural details as variable and verify them close to travel.
5. Reserve overnight stays beforehand
Official Mount Athos Center guidance states that pilgrims who want to stay overnight in monasteries or sketes should reserve a place beforehand. Athos is a living monastic community; accommodation should not be treated like ordinary walk-in hotel inventory.
6. Use the Atlas as reference, not as a promise of access
Athos Atlas profiles explain stable relationships, names and the traditional monastic order. They do not promise that a monastery can receive visitors on a particular date.
